More than 25 years ago, when Bayshore Fire Rescue was exclusively a volunteer fire department they saw a need within their community to help less fortunate families provide Christmas for their children. They would drive around the community with Santa on the fire truck delivering Christmas presents to the children. In those days the efforts were focused on the area known as Seminole Campground as that was the area of greatest concentration of families in need. Today's efforts are focused on providing Christmas gifts for underprivileged children to open on Christmas and food gifts to help sustain the families.
The recent changes in the economy and unemployment have
spurred the growth and reach even farther. Today the range of assistance covers
as far east as Alva and as far west as Cape Coral, south into the City of Fort
Myers and of course North Fort Myers. Last year as the reach expanded
south of the river into East Fort Myers and Tice, it seemed appropriate to
change the name of what had been known as Seminole Christmas. The name was
changed to Bayshore Rescues Christmas, but Bayshore Fire Rescue couldn't do it
without the help of some very generous supporters located around Lee County.
